The end of 2008 saw Fossils begin the recording of their fifth studio album, which was released on 19 September 2009. It was titled Fossils 3 and developed as a concept album. It endeavours to tell the story of a mysterious character known only as Shada Jama (White Shirt) through the interlinked audio tracks as well as a separate graphic account contained in the inlay cards. Mayookh Bhowmick on the distortion tabla, Indrajit Dey (Indra) on the keyboards, and a team from the Kolkata Music Academy Chamber Orchestra led by Abraham Mazumder were the guest contributors to the album. Fossils 3 would go on to win in the Best Non-Film Album category of the Anandalok Awards 2009.
2009 marked the band's tenth anniversary.
The band's official fan club, Fossils Force, was launched the same year, which started their operations through a blood donation camp on 1 May 2009. They continue to engage in activities for social welfare, such as contributing to the relief of people affected by the Cyclone Aila.
Rupam on the Rocks, written by Rupam Islam and published by Ananda Publishers was launched at the Kolkata Book Fair 2009.
The same year saw Fossils touring the UK and Bangalore.
2010 started with a change in the lineup. Bubun was replaced by Tanmoy on the drums.
In July of 2010, the band played live at Nashville in the United States.
Later in the year, Rupam Islam won a National Film Award (Silver Lotus or Rajat Kamal) in the Best Male Playback Singer category from the Government of India for his work in the film Mahanagar @ Kolkata.

Mission F: 2006 Fossils band
The band's third studio album, entitled Mission F, was released in 2006. It was a theme album for the first Kolkata Police Friendship Cup Football Tournament.
A special track, "Aeka Nauo", dedicated to HIV positive people, was included in the album. It featured Usha Uthup and was produced in collaboration with the Kolkata Sukriti Foundation. A free VCD distributed with the album contains the music video for the track, which shows HIV positive people with their faces uncovered interacting freely with Uthup and the band members. The VCD also contained a chat session with band members.
Radio Mirchi collaborated with the band to produce two "unplugged" versions of previously recorded tracks that were included in the album.
According to a survey conducted by Radio Mirchi, Mission F was declared the best-selling album in Kolkata for the year 2006.
History
Formation and early years: 1998 - 2000
The band was assembled through the efforts of Manish jha. Then a struggling solo artist, Islam scouted for like-minded individuals and eventually succeeded in gathering a tentative lineup in 1998.
The group started to call themselves "Fossils" after a suggestion by their guitarist Deep. The name is inspired by a line from one of Rupam's lyrics: "Khoro aamar fossil, onubhutir michhil protikriashil kono biplobe".
Initial audience reaction to the band's music was not encouraging. During their first few shows, they met with jeering and hostile objection to the rock style and techniques they employed.
Thus, the band name was meant to convey a sense of an "underground" movement that the members felt they had initiated and their belief that they would be fossilized into history under the pressure of social disapproval of their music, only to be excavated decades later by musicologists wishing to discover the roots of Bangla rock.
The band would experience a flurry of lineup changes until the end of 1999, by which time a sort of permanency was achieved with Rupam (vocals), Chandra (bass), Allan (guitar), Stephen (drums), Indra (keyboards), and Parikhshit (manager) as the members.
Aupodartho: 2007
In the first half of 2007, Rupam Islam worked on a separate project named RnB with the bassist Bumpy.
In the second half of 2007, the band released a music video album entitled Aupodartho.
The album was scheduled to be launched in Music World, Park Street, Kolkata. The crowd turnout was so unexpectedly huge that fans had to be turned out and the outlet's premises closed. The police had a tough time controlling the crowd. The release eventually happened on the same day, with Rupam Islam placing himself atop a stool outside the outlet and addressing the fans without a microphone.
During the Pujas of 2007, Rupam Islam's 1998 solo album was re-launched by Sa Re Ga Ma HMV.

Fossils 2: 2004 - 2005
The band's second album, entitled Fossils 2, was released in 2004. It was then noted as the Bangla band album with the highest budget to date. The album was partly sponsored by the Thums Up brand. The mastering engineer was Steve Fallone of Sterling Sound, New York.
The band witnessed a surge in popularity.
In 2005, the manager Parikshit was expelled from the band; Rupam and Deep jointly took over his work. As of 2010, management is handled by Rupam's wife Rupsha Dasgupta and Deep.

Fossils: 2000 - 2003
In 2000, the band recorded a demo version of their tracks. They faced rejection several times from different record houses.
In 2001, the guitarist Allan left the band for a corporate career. Former members Teno and Deep re-joined in Allan's stead.
A contract was landed with Asha Audio and by the end of the same year, recording for the band's first studio album began. The recording had to start without Allan, whose departure was so sudden there wasn't enough time to rework their tracks. Some of the guitar tracks for this album had to be lifted from the demo version. The album was entitled Fossils and released in 2002. It was not an instant success, but the music caught on once the FM radio stations started broadcasting the tracks. The album's popularity has increased with time.
Teno left the band in 2002 and was replaced by Partha.
In 2003, the drummer Stephen underwent rehabilitation. Andre served as part-time drummer till Bubun joined.
By this time, the band had created a niche audience and dedicated following among the youth.

Kolkata, Sept 21 (Calcutta Tube/IBNS): Popular Bengali singer Rupankar, joining the league of those coming out with albums on the occasion of the forthcoming festive season (DURGA PUJA), released ‘Mohonay’ here on Monday.
Composed by Amit Banerjee, the eight-track album revisits the “melody era” and carries the essence of legendary music composer R D Burman in every single track, is how the people behind the album presented it.
“I wanted to do something different from what I have been doing over the past few years. As the years go by, there have been changes in my style and attitude. This is an attempt to revisit the old Rupankar,” said the singer.
Upon further prodding, Rupankar, whose early-day hits ‘Ruby Ray’ and ‘Bho Katta’ still are among his most loved numbers, said it was his erstwhile simplicity that he tried to bring out again through the album.
“My favourite in the album would have to be the first track, ‘Aye Mon’. But its not just that one track, each and every one of them has a special story behind it,” he said.
People from the Bengali music fraternity, including Srikanto Acharya, Joy Sarkar and Anasua, turned up for the evening, which was anchored by funnyman Mir.
Despite the decline of physical sales of albums due to piracy digital means of distribution, Orion Entertainment, the album producers, said they were optimistic that Mohonay would fare as well as their last few albums had.Free Download MP3 Song

Barandaye Roddur : Sung in male voice, this is the most popular song of the album…
Kam Sarse : Sung in male voice, this is the funniest song the band ever composed, provided you understand the lyrics…even if you don’t understand the meaning of the song, nevermind because the tune is rocking!
Madhur Madhur Chauni : Sung in male voice and has funny lyrics…meant to be a romantic song.
Rangila Re : Sung in male voice. Now the lyrics might seem very funny but this song contains a deep inner meaning and contains a moral……

- Shantanu Moitra makes his debut in Tollywood with Antaheen (He is extremely well known for his work in Pareenita)
Brief Review:
Just like the first film by Aniruddha Roy Chowchury – Anuranan, his second venture brings back another unique story/drama in Bengali Cinema that revolves around Kolkata, the daily life, relationships and so on. The film Antaheen revolves around 3 couples. Aparna Sen plays the role of a successful career woman, Rahul Bose plays the role of a cop. The film tries to capture the diffect states of human relationships -
- Mita and Shauvik – married but they don’t love each other
- Aparna Sen and Kalyan Roy – they are separated but still loves each other
- Rahul’s Unt Sharmila Tagore lives by herself – still she is not alone. She shares some common things with Rahul. She gets close to some unknown caller who would call her numerous times a day.
- Rahul Bose – an introvert cop but overly romantic Bengali guy. He starts chatting with someone and comes close to his chat-mate.
- Radhika – a journalist with unique identity – She is the Chat-Mate of Rahul. She also works under Aparna Sen at Star Anand
Antaheed has been shot mostly in Calcutta. “It’s about relationships and the role gadgets play in relationships. There’s love, waiting, distance between two people and love that develops from a distance.” – the director said. We must all see the movie. During a period of romance and actions films flooding the Tollywood, Antaheen is simply like some frsh air. Unique in its treatment. We wish great success for Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury and wish him a great long career of Bengali Film direction.

Olot Palot (2009) Bengali Film Review
Olot Palot is the latest Bengali Comedy film by Swapan Saha featuring Rishi, Hiran,S udipta and Shriya in lead roles. Olot Palot is a great comedy about a poor and rich guy who happens to live each others life. Rupam Islam has sung a song for Rocket Mondal in the movie. Rajatava Dutta is definitely another attraction in the latest Bengali film.
Rishi has worked with Prosenjit in Takkar that did not so very well. He seriously over acted in Takkar and we are hoping that comedy should be coming more naturally to him this time. It would be nice to see Hiran back after disappointing Maa Amar Maa.Exclusive Bengali movie review coming up shortly.

Director:
Ravi Kinagi. You may not know the name. Specially if you are one of those people who have lost their hope in Bengali Films. Ravi Kinagi also does not have a profile on Internet Movie Database (IMDB). However, he is one of the most prominent director in Bengali Cinema these days who can bring people to the movie halls. He does not do films that we call “intellectual” however he makes commertial films and the does a very good job. His stories are most of the time a mixture of nultiple Hindi films but blended extremely nicely in Bengali perspective. His latest film “Premer Kahini” is another very successful film by him. It did so well in Calcutta that most of the cinema halls were house-ful for several weeks.
Short Review:
Akash (Deb) and Barsha (Koyel Mullick) met just by mere accident. Deb fell in love with Koyel Mullick instantly. However he lost contact with Koyel and could not track her address by any means. He was visiting a marriage ceremony of the doughter of his mom’s friend and to his surprize, he found the bride was Koyel Mullick herself. Now I am sure you can image the scene in “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and so on. After that there are some good emotional drama followed by a happy ending.
Jishu Sengupta was seen for a short period and came to sacrifice Koyel to Deb. Ranjit Mullick is simply excellent as he is in any other Bengali movies. Jit Ganguly did a nice job with music direction too. The film has very good cinematography and it should be a very enjoyable film for your family to watch together.
This film also means a lot for Deb. There is only only ONE actor who has firmed his place as “hero” in Tollywood after Prosenjit. That is Jeet. Recently there are some more bengali heroes coming up in Tollywood. Deb is now a common face to all due to the huge success of “Premer Kahini”. He is now even getting offers to do item songs in other movies too (a trend from Bollywood)!

Doll is the only child of rich parents. Raj studies in the same college but is an orphan who lives in a poor neighbourhood and pays for his education by working as a stuntman in films. They are friends (bandhu) and hang out with the same group together. Their friends are convinced that the two are in love but Doll and Raj believe they are just friends. Doll is engaged to be married to a repatriate who is a corporate executive. A crazy girl in Raj’s neighbourhood is convinced that she is married to Raj. This creates a misunderstanding in Doll and she pushed her parents to marry her off to the waiting fiancĂ©. Raj, out of hospital after a head injury, is shocked to discover that his old friends are avoiding him. He also learns that Doll is getting married to the boy chosen by her parents. A shocked and disillusioned Raj stops going to college and his work as a stuntman. He takes up a job in a courier service. His work lands him at Doll’s door. He learns that she is being brutally tortured and branded by her two-timing, alcoholic husband. She realizes that Raj is not just her friend, but her companion (saathi) too. The two decide to run away to New Jalpaiguri to begin life again. But her husband sets his goons on Raj and he is killed. Doll picks up a trident from God-knows-where and kills herself because the lovers had promised that they would unite in life or in death.
Surya Dutta as Raj shows some promise but has a long long way to go to hone his skills before he faces the camera again. Shinjini Sengupta as Doll needs to tone up her figure too before she can carry those skimpy dresses she wears in the film. She fails to emote in the serious scenes. Rita Koyral as her unthinking, unfeeling and crude mother redefines the term ‘motherhood’ for cinema and for real life. She hams from beginning to end and the script does not back her at all. Raja Chatterjee as Doll’s husband is okay. Sabyasachi Chakraborty is the only actor who holds himself with dignity as Doll’s industrialist father. Two characters in the script are unusual. One is the crazy girl who is cured in the end and the other is the conman whose lines are punched with terminology picked from the cell-phone vocabulary. The former is introduced for drama and conflict while the latter is for comic relief. The girl’s character is over done and lacks logic after a point while the conman relieves the proceedings of a rather unwieldy and rambling screenplay. Cinematography is flat with little resort to lighting changes but the production design for the slum neighbourhood is good. Nishad Chandra’s music is okay while Gautam Susmit’s ‘psychology’ number is cute if one is permitted to use the word.
The script is marred by distorted logic. Doll fails to gauge that the girl claiming to be Raj’s wife is crazy when her behaviour is so obviously crazy for all to see. Raj bursts out at her one day in college for having worn a revealing dress when he does not raise an eyebrow when she continues to wear skimpy dresses even after that. The things that hold the film together are – the unusual character twists, the rapid pace, and the freshness of youth. Shinjini’s dancing talent is wasted in the film.
The genre of the young college romance has its own USP. But it is not an easy job to bring out a film like Ek Duje Ke Liye or Chirodini Tumi Je Amar in a hurry. It is difficult to make complete amateurs act without at least some rehearsals and workshops. Anindya Sarkar has done some memorable work for television. One expected him to take greater care in his debut in feature film after a long wait of 22 years. He was possibly pressured by budget constraints. Thus, Sathi Amar Bandhu Amar, despite Anindya’s good intentions, fails to impress.

Shri Venkatesh’s latest release, ‘Poran Jaae Jolia Re‘ directed by Ravi Kinnagi with Dev and Subhasree in lead roles is a love-story woven around the age old and proven concept of infusing patriotism in the hearts of those who lack it.
The story starts with an NRI family residing in London for more than 30 years. So quite obviously, their son Sid (Siddhartha) and Anna (Anamika), born in foreign soil are more accustomed to modern British customs and culture which seemed a growing concern for their parents. To top it off, Sidd, following a rude confontration with his parents leaves home. Worried and depressed about their daughter’s upbringing and also to apply reins to her uncontrolled lifestyle, the parents plan to take her on a tour of her homesoil in West Bengal, with a remote hope of finding a suitable groom for their daughter. So, the family minus the son takes off for the village in Bengal where Runu, the father had spent most of his younger days.
There Anna met Raj, the son of her father’s childhood friend and though they started on a tiff but it was clearly apparent that Raj had completely fallen in love with Anna. This was also what Runu looking for and he started pursuing Anna for a hurried engagement. Mad and angry at her parents, Anna called up her brother for a direction. The shrewd Sid advices Anna to agree to the engagement and then to ask Raj to travel with them to London where she will be safe to ditch him. Acting likewise, Anna agrees to the engagement and easily persuades Raj to travel to London. Once there she abruptly called off the wedding sending Raj writhing in anguish and pain. But determination drove Raj to claim his love and infuse patriotism in the mind of Anna. In the process he also effects a happy reconciliation between Sid and his parents. Thus an emotional climax is awaited and a happy ending is guaranteed.
The Music/Songs from “Poran Jay Joliya Re”
The movie, with all the ingredients for a blockbuster, is studded with some fine musicals with ‘Dhaker Taale Taale‘ being the most lively of the lot and promising to be one of the catch tunes for this year’s Durga Puja.
Critic’s comment on performances from the movie “Poran Jay Joliya Re”
Dev is good during the action and dance sequences but as far as acting is concerned Subhasree is proving to evolve more maturedly with her natural performance. Tota Roychowdhury and Biswajit Chakraborty are fascinatingly perfect with an excellent support from Laboni Sarkar but Aritra’s precocity was quite uncalled for that cheapens the mood of the movie.
End Comment on “Poran Jay Joliya Re”
This emotionally drenched movie with some unrealistic moments is however not without vices, the chief being trying to impress the audience the hometown of Anna and Sid to be London though the landscapes are shot further south and in another continent! Also Raj’s popping in from nowhere just in time when Anna needs him most defies logic. It is clearly apparent in the 1st half that Anna hates India and anything Indian but her accent never betrays that she clearly nurtures the Bengali language as her mother tongue. Finally the film, in several occassions, mirrors sequences from ‘Namastey London‘ which disheartens the Bengali cinema lovers for the lack of originality.
In short, ”Poran Jai Joliya Re” is nothing but a copy (sometimes frame to frame) of 2007 Akshay-Katrina movie, ”Namastey London”, but if you are not bothered with originality but looking for an entertaining packagethis one is recommended without doubt. Storyline:
The movie starts with a spoilt NRI girl Anna (Subhashree) whose wild ways ofliving forces her parents to take her to India to find a suitable groom. Here, they come across Raj (Dev). Raj plays pranks on Anna at first, but slowlyfalls in love.Anna’s parents also liked Raj and fixed Anna’s marriagewith him .But,Anna loved Harry,a playboy in Malaysia and when she could not avoid the marriage, she devised a plan. After ring ceremony, Raj should go abroad with her. But, after Raj goes to Malaysia, he realizes That Anna had betrayed him. Thereafter begins Raj’s quest to gain thelove of Anna.
The storyline may be simple-but add to this, Durga Puja celebration, exotic locationsof Malaysia, a salsa dance, emotions running high, an unnecessary yet a trademark fight sequence, and last, but, not the least, football-and any Bengali commercial movie-loving person’s mouth will be watering. There is even a small surprise element at the start. Dev is maturing with every movie, and fitting into this role afteraction-packed “Challenge”needed a sincere effort, which is evident. The subplot, revolving around Anna’s brother would not have been half as interesting without Tota. The comic reliefcomes from the show-stealing one-liners of Aritra Dey Banik. The music and cinematography, like most films of Shree Venkatesh, are exceptional.
But,there are some negatives as well. The film shows Malaysia, yet tries To claim that Anna lives in England. and portrays most of the foreigncharacters as British (in order to keep in touch with you-know-which-film). A little more fluency in English is expected for someone, brought upabroad. Some of the characters are unnecessary. Subhashree looks good, but does not match it well with acting skills, she failed to bring the meanness demanded of the character. Also, I must say the promotion, though extensive, has been quite revealing, so the movie always stayson predictable course. Still, this is, in my opinion, the most entertaining Bengali commercial movie of 2009, even considering “Challenge”, a family drama, worth a one-time watch.
